Tangkahan is in of the villages in the foothill of Gunung Leuser National Park, North Sumatra. It is where the Sumatran elephant sanctuary, Camp Response Unit, situated. Tangkahan is also known as the hidden paradise as it is naturally located on the border of the National Park, at the junction of two pristine rivers, Buluh River and Batang River.
You can help with elephant washing here, as well as doing a jungle trekking. Elephant ride is not recommended as the skeleton of an elephant is not very suited to carrying anything more than the elephant's own weight. If it is necessary to ride an elephant, from a health perspective it is better to sit on the back of the neck, rather than on the back.
