How To Get There
Kerinci Seblat can be reached either from Padang airport (PDG) in West Sumatra, or Muara Bungo Airport (MRB) in Jambi province - where the Kubu people live in 'Bukit Dua Belas National Park'. From each airport, it will take around 6 hour drive to your starting point of Kersik Tuo village (padang route), or Sungai penuh (Muara Bungo route). You will need a homestay or guesthouse overnight before starting the trek in the morning to Kerinci Seblat National Park.
If you take public bus from Padang, go and catch them at Ulak Karang Market. There are aircond and non aircond minibuses. They leave to Kersik Tuo then to Sungai Penuh twice every day, at 9 am and 5 pm with cost per person roughly IDR 200K (aircond) and IDR 100K (Non Aircond).
You can have your hotel/tour operator arrange you a shared/private taxi from Padang airport/hotel, or Muara Bungo airport/hotel to Kersik Tuo or Sungai Penuh, or find them yourself at the airport/around your hotel.
Minang people are the ethnic group indigenous to the Minangkabau Highlands of West Sumatra. They are strongly Islamic, but also follow their ethnic traditions, or adat. The Minangkabau adat was derived from animist and Hindu-Buddhist beliefs before the arrival of Islam. Minang people are quite expressive and friendly people.
The Minangkabau are the largest matrilineal society in the world, with property, family name and land passing down from mother to daughter, while religious and political affairs are the responsibility of men, although some women also play important roles in these areas. One of the most delicious food in the world, 'Rendang' a spicy meat dish cooked with herbs and coconut milk until it dries, originated from the Minangkabau ethnic group and is now commonly served across the country.
