Lake Toba is a large natural lake occupying the caldera of a supervolcano. The lake is about 100 kilometres (62 mi) long, 30 kilometres (19 mi) wide, and up to 505 metres (1,657 ft) deep. It is the site of a massive supervolcanic eruption that occurred 69,000 to 77,000 years ago, representing a climate-changing event. Located in the middle of the northern part of Sumatra with a surface elevation of about 900 metres (2,953 ft), Lake Toba is the largest lake in Indonesia and also the largest volcanic lake in the world.
Lake activity, swim, kayaking, a Batak museum and dance on Samosir island, go with motorbike/car surrounding the island and visit several traditional villages.
How To Get There
Take a flight to Medan/Kuala Namu Airport (KNO), continue with 4-5 hour non stop car drive to Lake Toba
From Medan airport/hotel, go to 'Amplas' bus station. Here, take a bus to Siantar (2-3 hour trip). In Siantar bus station take a bus to Parapat/lake Toba (around 2 hour trip), and buy a ferry ticket to cross to Samosir Island.
From Berastagi, go to the nearest bus terminal and take a bus to Lake Toba (around 3 hour trip).
From Bukit Lawang/Tangkahan, take a bus to 'Pinang Baris' bus station in Medan (3 hour trip), continue with a minivan to 'Amplas' bus station (1-2 hour trip), another bus to Siantar (2 hour trip), and another bus to Parapat/Lake Toba (2 hour trip).
You can have your hotel/tour operator arrange you a shared/private taxi from Medan airport/hotel, Bukit Lawang, Tangkahan, Berastagi, to Lake Toba, or find them yourself at the airport/around your hotel.

The indigenous people centered on Lake Toba and Samosir Island within the lake, are the Batak Toba, or Bataknese. They are mostly christians. Bataknese are very expressive and spontaneous people.
The Batak Toba people has their own tradition, language, Toba Batak language, clothing, etc. They frequently build in traditional Batak architecture styles which are common on Samosir. Cultural demonstrations, performances and festivities such as Sigale Gale are often held for tourists. One of Batak famous foods is 'Arsik Ikan Mas/Gold Fish'.
