Pulau Weh is a small active volcanic island to the northwest of Sumatra, 45 minutes by fast regular ship or 2 hours by ferry from mainland, Banda Aceh. It is a wildlife protection area with 60 square kilometres (23 sq mi) of inland and sea around the island. Coral reef areas around the island are known for their large variety of fish species.
The island mostly offers snorkeling (in Iboih) and diving (Gapang and Sumur Tiga Beach). While in Banda Aceh, the capital city of Aceh Province, you can visit the Tsunami museum and boat on villager's house's roof as well as Aceh Grand Mosque.
How To Get There
Take a flight to Banda Aceh Airport (BTJ), continue with a car drive to Ulee Lheue seaport for a regular ferry/fast ferry to Sabang seaport. Or take a direct local flight to Sabang airport (SBG) from Medan (KNO). From Sabang airport/seaport takes only around 30 - 45 minute car drive to Iboih, Gapang, Sumur Tiga Beach where you can find accommodation.
From Medan, take a bus to Aceh, continue with a local transport to Ulee Lheue seaport for the ferry, continue with hiring local transport (minibus) to your accommodation.
You can have your hotel/tour operator arrange you a shared/private taxi from Medan airport/hotel, Banda Aceh airport/hotel to Ulee Lheue seaport, as well as a local transport to pick you in Sabang seaport, after the ferry, to your accommodation, or find them yourself at the airport/around your hotel.

People live in Sabang are Acehnese. They are all friendly and open to visitors.
Aceh is a special province where Sharia law has been applied exclusively for the province. However, there are some Christians and Buddhists on the island - mostly Javanese, Bataknese and Chinese. Aceh people have their own language, Acehnese, and tradition. Special food of Sabang is 'Sate Gurita' or octopus satay with peanut sauce or Padang (yellow spicy) sauce
